10,000 Gamerscore and the 360 Dashboard Update

Back to the regular programming. I've met my goal of getting 10,000 Gamerscore within a year of acquiring my Xbox 360 console. I was actually hoping for a bit more of a challenge to hit it, but borrowing BioShock and then getting The Orange Box, Assassin's Creed and now Mass Effect made it easy. I've still got a ton to do on Assassin's Creed, but Mass Effect is so captivating. I've swayed at times since some of Mass Effect's side quests get a little repetitive, but the story really gets involving and the conversation is great. I actually love the combat, too, but I know some people don't like it as much as I do. If you are looking for a 3rd person shooter, it's not Mass Effect. It's an RPG despite how it was hyped. Enough of that, though, I'll finish ...

Nothing if Not Patient

In an effort to get into blogging more frequently, I thought I'd fill you in on how my search for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption went today. Technically, today is the official release date, though I had never really expected to find it today. In most places in Canada (and, I expect, most places in general) it is quite hard to find games on the day they are advertised as coming out unless they are a really big title. Now, MP3:C is a really big title, from a commercial and gaming standpoint. Nintendo, however, seems to do this thing where they don't tell the retailer when their games will get there and don't ship them until the day they are supposed to be sold. This is great for preventing stores from breaking the 'street date,' (See: BioShock) but it causes a lot of problems for people like me, who love buying games the day they are supposed to be available. I started out by making a list of all the stores I wanted to contact, which resulted in a list of 3 Best Buys, 5 Futureshops, 6 EB Games, an HMV and the Wal-Mart, Zellers and Rogers Video in the city I live. Spoiler: not a single one of them had it. I can assure you if they did I'd be playing the game rather than writing this. The closest I got was at the second closest EB Games to me. While all the others had said, We don't have it, it's due out tomorrow anyways. (Which is wrong, but I didn't feel like arguing with so many people) this location told me to call back after noon as they were expecting a shipment. When I called at 1:30, they said they weren't getting it after all. If nothing else, the conversations supplied me with some interesting - and sometimes amusing - answers.

Mostly Just “Messy.”

This summer I've gotten back into Warhammer 40,000, a table-top science fiction table top soldier game. The game is from Games Workshop, they produce and sell the products. There are two Games Workshop stores in Edmonton, the nearest to where I live is in the West Edmonton Mall. I have basically been going there since I got into the hobby, I first played on a holiday in Calgary and went to the other Edmonton once or twice. This was two or so years ago, but at the time the employees were really annoying and I was basically turned off that store for, well, ever. But now I'm seriously considering going back to it. Over the past year, maybe less, the WEM GW store has started to get really bad. Underestimating how many people who would come to events was common, the good employees started leaving and now the summer events don't look like they'll be going very well. Yesterday I went to Games Workshop to participate in the terribly-renamed event "Quick and Messy." It consists of two 500pt. armies working together against another two 500pt. army team. Last summer I had a ton of fun doing this event, which was organized as a tournament. It went along with a painting contest and, if I remember correctly, a similar event on a different night of the week for Warhammer and Lord of the Rings. (Those are GW's other major games.) This time, however, was significantly different, though I should have been able to figure that out by the new name of the event.
